Angel Murray Explores Intoxicating Infatuation In ‘Dreamt You’

London-raised Angel Murray has graced the world with her first release of the year. Dreamt You is an immersive production which delves into the push and pull of infatuation. Murray is an emerging force in the alternative-pop world, with her introspective storytelling and cinematic production. Her unique sound stands out in this growing genre, and she is carving a space for herself in the alt-pop world. Along with being a rising alt-pop princess, she balances her law studies alongside producing addictive beats.

Driven by powerful drum beats, the listener is instantly transported to a dark and hazy club. From the opening lines, “I’m made for you, saw you in hues, what a view, can’t hide the truth”, confusion and infatuation are set into the lyrical experience. From the get-go, you are drawn into this hot and sweaty club, a moment away from meeting the one. 

Dreamt You is told from the perspective of the hunter, longing for attention. But through the production, the narrative alternates between the hunter and the hunted. When talking about the inspiration, Murray said, “I’ve experienced both sides, being the one obsessed and being the one placed on a pedestal." The past emotional experiences have impacted the overall sound, allowing the listener to choose between narratives. By using the pounding beat and hazy, cinematic melodies, the production creates a conflicting narrative to the lyrics. It is almost a choose-your-own-adventure, where the song generates a different life with every new listen. 

As the song progresses, the listener is consumed by confusion. Murray sings about infatuation and obsession, “Is it too much? Am I lovestruck? Heart beats so much, can’t get enough.” Murray is almost going mad with desire and lust, creating an illusion of strobe lights, a smoky haze, and a pounding headache from one too many drinks. The infatuation has taken over every element. 

The final note lingers, waking the listener from a deep dream. With ringing in their ears and a twinge of last night's headache, they are left feeling perplexed as if they just experienced a regrettable night out. In the 3 minutes and 30 seconds, the listener is transported to a messy night, where you drank too much, messaged someone you shouldn’t have and kissed someone you shouldn’t have. A rush of euphoria lingers throughout the song, making it the perfect soundtrack for messy summer nights and endless summer crushes.
